Frank Biermann is a political scientist and professor of Global Sustainability Governance at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His research examines how institutions and governance systems shape political responses to planetary crises and human-driven transformations of the earth system. In 2006, Frank founded the Earth System Governance Project and served as its first chair until 2018. His current work focuses on establishing the International Panel on Earth System Governance, a new science assessment network. His contributions have been recognized among others with the Volvo Environment Prize, for “defining new pathways for international environmental governance in a period of global change”, and the Distinguished Scholar Award in Environmental Studies from the International Studies Association.
