Starting in May 2023, Benno Fladvad will join the Institute of Geography at the University of Hamburg as a junior professor (tenure track) for "Peace Research in Natural Science with a focus on Climate and Security" and will work on the interplay of climate change, security, and peacebuilding.
Next to climate change itself, the focus will be on how measures to mitigate global warming can contribute to destabilization of social systems and new conflicts along the water-energy-food nexus. In particular, the decarbonization strategies of industrialized countries risk fostering insecurity and conflict in politically contested and environmentally sensitive areas, such as the extraction of lithium for electromobility or large-scale infrastructural projects like wind farms for the production of green hydrogen. At the same time, however, combating climate change also offers opportunities for new cooperation and peace-building measures. What might these look like? What designs for the future are emerging in the process? And to what extent can they contribute to a democratic, peaceful and just security policy in the age of the Anthropocene? These and similar questions will be the focus of the interdisciplinary professorship over the next six years.
We congratulate on the appointment!
