First funding phase
In the first four years, from 2019-2023, the Centre addressed the question of how modern societies change under different ideas of sustainability. It conceptualised modernisation, transformation and control as three distinct paths of sustainability – each of which envisions societal change differently and is shaped by different practices, (infra)structures and imaginaries of the future. These trajectories not only point to what futures are being debated today, but also mark new lines of conflict, patterns of inequality and hierarchies of power that are interwoven with these respective conceptions of sustainability.
