Karl-Werner Brand is a sociologist and political scientist whose interests range from social history of Westerns societies and social movement research to environmental sociology and dynamics of social-ecological transformations – and their political and societal blockades – in different regions of the world. He is working both theoretically and empirically on these questions. Karl-Werner Brand has been professor for Sociology at the Technical University of Munich and director of the ‚Munich Institute for Social Research‘ (MPS), which conducted a lot of empirical research on questions of sustainable development since the early nineties. At the moment, he is working on an new, updated edition of the handbook „Die sozial-ökologische Transformation der Welt“ (The social-ecological transformation of the world) which was first published by Campus in 2017.
