Ulrich Brand is a political scientist at the University of Vienna who is interested in the obstacles and potentials of emancipatory socio-ecological transformations and just transitions. His work is rooted in critical theory, especially critical political economy and political ecology, and together with others he developed the approach of historical-materialist political analysis (HMPA). A few years ago, Ulrich and Markus Wissen coined the term ‘imperial mode of living’, which is most fully developed in a book that has been translated into eleven languages. A new book ‘Kapitalismus am Limit‘ was published in March 2024 and will be published in English, Spanish and Portuguese in autumn 2025. More than twenty years ago, he co-founded the Association for Critical Social Research (AkG), and since 2016 he has also been a member of the Global Working Group ‘Beyond Development’. A regional focus of his work is Latin America, where he has been a member of the Permanent Working Group ‘Alternatives to Development’ since 2011. During the fellowship period, he aims at developing a social-ecological critique of international competitiveness.
