Antje Daniel is a sociologist whose interests range from political and environmental sociology to socio-ecological transformation and the future and utopia, as well as gender and intersectionality. She has worked in various regions of the world, including Europe (Austria), Latin America (Brazil, Chile) and Africa (Southern and Eastern Africa). She is a senior researcher at the University of Vienna and is also affiliated with the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Center for Social Change at the University of Johannesburg. She is currently leading two research projects. The first is an Austrian Science Fund project entitled Youth Environmental Activism: An Intersectional and Global Perspective and the sub-project on socio-ecological conflicts in the Uganda/Austria Climate Fund Project, Analysis of the Implications of the CSDDD to Map Potential Entry Points for a Just Transition. While her current academic research focuses on socio-ecological conflicts, her previous research centred on utopia, the future, and prefiguration in South Africa, with case studies on educational, environmental, and housing conflicts. Relating to this research, her most recent book is titled Analysing Contemporary Society through Lived Utopias (Bristol University Press, 2026).
