Venerando Amaro is a Full Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (DECAM/UFRN). His research leverages the strategic integration of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geodesy, and Digital Image Processing to achieve comprehensive characterization and dynamic monitoring of complex coastal and marine systems. Holding a joint Doctorate in Geosciences (USP/Lyon II, France) with a focus on remote sensing applied to geological processes, complemented by postdoctoral research in Coastal Engineering at LNEC (Portugal), and graduate and Master's degrees in Geology, Dr. Amaro possesses an interdisciplinary foundation. His research portfolio addresses critical issues, including: precise assessment of urban vulnerability to erosion and flooding utilizing high-resolution geospatial data; development of advanced methodologies for shoreline mapping and change detection; and detailed monitoring of coastal biomass dynamics essential for ecosystem health and sustainable resource management. Currently, he is a Senior Researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology KLIMAPOLIS (CNPq) and Coordinator of the Geoprocessing Team for the Marine Spatial Planning of Northeast Brazil (PEM NE, MCTI, 2024). Dr. Amaro is the patent holder (BR 102018068752-2) for an innovative method of capturing and analyzing microbiological spectral signatures for the rapid and accurate assessment and monitoring of terrestrial and hydrographic oil contamination, a crucial advancement for environmental remediation. Dr. Amaro significantly contributes to the scientific understanding of Earth surface changes within dynamic equatorial coastal ecosystems, delivering data and rigorous analyses that underpin informed decision-making for coastal resilience and sustainable resource management.
