In November, the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies "Futures of Sustainability" will present the film series "TENSE FUTURES - FUTURE TENSES. Um/Welten im Film" at various venues in Hamburg. For this, Anna Grabo (artist in residence and curator of the film series) has put together a selection of astonishing science fiction films, documentaries and experimental films that deal with various social-ecological themes. In time-lapse and slow-motion, from bird's-eye and worm's-eye view, the world is shown in past, future and present scenarios. The series comprises a total of eleven dates and plays in three different locations in Hamburg: the Metropolis Kino, the B-Movie and the MS Stubnitz.
The entire program is now available on our events page.
On Friday, 03/11/23, at 7.00 p.m. the series will start at the program cinema B-Movie with the audiovisual installation "Back Home! A Journey Through The Rise (And Fall?) of The Capitalocene" by Aleksi Kuesy, who will also be a guest.
On Sunday, 05/11/23, at 7.30 p.m. in the Metropolis Kino, Sighard Neckel (speaker of the Centre) and Anna Grabo will present "Koyaanisqatsi" (USA, 1982, directed by Godfrey Reggio), which has become a milestone in film history with its radical visual and musical concept.
On Tuesday, 07/11/23, at 7.00 p.m., "Soylent Green" (USA, 1973, directed by Richard Fleischer), one of the first eco-dystopian films, which shows the world in the year 2022, will be shown in the Metropolis Kino. Sören Altstaedt (Research Associate) will provide theoretical input on this.
Another highlight, which will be shown on Tuesday, 14/11/23, at 7.30 p.m. on the MS Stubnitz: "Neptune Frost" (Rwanda/USA, 2021, directed by Saul Williams/Anisia Uzeyman), a science fiction musical film, which takes its starting point with rebellious coltan miners in Burundi. A theoretical input comes from Adyam Tesfamariam (author and social scientist).
