In view of increasingly heated debates and the rise of right-wing populist movements, there is more and more talk of a “split in society”. As plausible as this diagnosis may seem, it raises questions: How far apart are opinions in the population really? And is society really more divided today than it was during the student protests or in the early 1990s? In their book "Triggerpunkte" (Trigger Points), published in 2023, Steffen Mau, Thomas Lux and Linus Westheuser map attitudes in four arenas of inequality: poverty and wealth; migration; diversity and gender; and climate protection. We discuss the key findings of the study and ask what they mean for current political and societal debates in the face of an escalating climate crisis.
